Many people don’t realize how many pests there are in the every day home. Dangerous infections and illnesses are often caused by pest contamination, and some pests pose a threat to you and your family, while others can cause severe damage to plants, flowers and greenery around your home. Either way, it’s best to protect your home from pests so that you can live a happy and healthy life. Here are some tips to get you started.

Outdoors

It’s important to maintain your front and backyard throughout the year. Don’t let the grass get too high or become infested with weeds. Mow the lawn on a regular basis, prune your garden, and cut your bushes. A healthy lawn will thrive and help keep pests out. You might also want to eliminate sources of standing water, such as deep puddles in your backyard that result from poor drainage systems. Standing water can be a source for germs and serve as a breeding ground for mosquitoes, spiders and ants.  If you have firewood left from the winter, or a pile of bricks sitting in your yard, get rid of them. Rodents love to hide and make homes in piles of rocks, bricks and firewood because they provide warmth and shelter. Walk around your house and check your window screens and doors. Make sure that they are tightly sealed. Flies, spiders and mosquitoes love to sneak in from the outside.

Inside

Once you have taken care of the outside of your home, you can get to work on the inside. Store all of your food in airtight containers so that they do not go to waste and attract mold. Also bring pet food and water indoors at night so that rodents won’t try to eat and drink it. Always empty your garbage on a regular basis. Excess garbage will attract rodents, insects, germs, and flies.  Clean your basement and your attic on a regular basis. Insects love to breed and live in old boxes full of clutter and dust. Clean all of your air filters around the home so that you don’t let dust build up and affect the clean air you breathe.
